Executive Coaching

“It seems most people are not real sure what executive coaching is about.”

How does coaching help?

Most people understand —

  • a coach in the world of sports is someone who trains players and athletes
  • the consultant is an expert who provides advice in a particular field
  • the mentor is experienced, usually older and offers insider information to someone less experienced or a new
  • the therapist treats mental and emotional problems with psychological methods

Yet, many are not clear about the role of an executive or “personal growth” coach.  That’s why I am The People Developer; it indicates who I am and what I do…develop people.

Simply put I help successful people continue along their growth path.

What do my coaching clients have in common?

  1. Success: They have achieved success in life, life is working for them, mostly
  2. Desire: They have a commitment to keep growing as a person
  3. Some “thing”: A behavior getting in their way…; everyone has something

What is the purpose of professional coaching?

Coaching accelerates growth.

The word history of “coach” is instructive at this point.

Coach was used to mean “a tutor” or “a trainer” in allusion to the speed of stagecoaches and railway coaches.  In the days before automobiles and airplanes, the fastest method of travel was by coach — at first horsedrawn and later steam-powered.  A coach in university parlance was an instructor who brought his students along at the fastest possible rate.

One of the key benefits of executive coaching is accelerated personal growth and professional development.  Leadership development that would take years to see in normal course of business is achieved in months with effective coaching.

Habitually successful people learn to recognize behavior that limits their influence, performance, or life.

What happens when business behaviors get in the way?  It not only impacts performance but creates added stress, frustration, disappointment, fear, anger, unfulfilled expectations, defeat, brokenness, or weariness.  That is what I call “The Box”.

“The Box” represents what is holding you back from your full potential.

Coaching provides opportunity, resources, and support to engage in reflection.  Consistent reflection allows you to make sense of experience, feedback, success, and failure.  Life will teach you, when you listen; leading to personal growth and change.

The key is to engage in the pursuit of truth regarding what is holding you back.  In terms of human growth, that requires time and place, resources, and some level of support.

Next Level Coaching allows you to move into what I call your “Spacious Place”; living life with purpose and passion while serving others.

Whether in business or personal life everyone experiences the impact of behavior.  Business behaviors holding you back from your next level can be changed.

What are the three responses to such limiting behaviors?

  1. A leader knows there is something getting in their way, but too busy to address it
  2. A leader knows there is something getting in their way, but don’t know what to do
  3. The leader is the only person in the room who doesn’t know

When do leaders look to executive coaching for impact?

  • High Stakes – a challenge, stretch goal or opportunity is presenting itself and it is urgent
  • Fast Growth – your company needs leaders quicker than life can produce them so you want to accelerate development
  • Gaps – the promotion was given, but the pressure is revealing some behaviors needing to be changed for continued success
  • Office Conflict – the number of complaints is significant, the technical side is perfect; how do you help the soft side?
  • Balance – work & life are out of balance, the unwanted consequences are showing up
  • Reward – combine a job well done with an emerging leader’s preparation & career path
  • Succession Planning

The World of Business and Executive Coaching

The pressure on business leaders today is significant:

  • Marching orders: do “more with less”
  • The demands combined with cutbacks
  • The pace: opportunity is NOW, less time for leadership development
  • Pressure exposes business behavior weaknesses
  • Competitive advantage: great talent, requiring effective people skills
  • Costly turnover: solid talent management is vital
  • Leadership development requires time and effort
  • Improved performance demands individual growth

Next Level Executive Coaching is

  • Intentional:  weekly, 1on1, often face to face
  • Specific: designed to produce a positive change in business behavior
  • Time sensitive: preferred 4 month engagement
  • Process-driven: allows achievement of individual potential

As an executive coach, I serve as an objective facilitator guiding a process proven effective for C-Level, Senior Executives, VP, Managers, and aggressive Business Owners.

A leader’s influence and credibility grows when others observe real, sustained change. The bottom-line is improved performance at the next level.

“The coaching experience helped me understand my own strengths and weaknesses in the practice dynamic. It has definitely helped me focus on my future career and how I plan to move forward in my future practice of medicine.  I feel that the experience has bettered me as a person, professional, and physician.  I have to admit that there were times that I would like to have the regular meetings with Steve to discuss issues in our office.”
